Pictures to demonstrate the effect of flash modifiers and white balance. (68 pictures)

I used my Olympus C-2100UZ camera, my Promaster 5750DX flash, and I used an offwhite background paper on a Savage Economy background stand. I shot the pictures in my living room, with some light coming in from the right hand window, and ceiling lights on the left side of the room, but with a flash sync speed of 1/250 second most of the light should come from the flash setup. I placed myself about a foot from the paper in order to show how harsh or soft the shadows are. The camera was about 5 feet from my chair, slightly above my head, and it was pointed down. I used the RM-1 remote control to take the pictures.

I took a second set of pictures where I was standing up with the fish shirt instead of the dragon shirt. I repeated the white umbrella test, and also did a silver umbrella, and Sto-fen Omni-bounce which I had just bought.

I have pictures for each aperture (f/stop) until the picture is obviously underexposed. This gives an example of how much power is consumed by the modifier (the more f/stops that are supported, the more power is available). Since the flash used in this case was controlled by the camera, it could shut off the flash when the camera believed it had enough light.

In terms of results, the ceiling bounce and white umbrella gave the softest results, which is expected since the effective light source is much larger. The silver umbrella gives slightly stronger shadow (ie, more specular). I was surprised that the mini-softbox still produced fairly harsh shadows. The umbrella was the easiest on my eyes, with the ceiling bounce coming in second.

I also added some pictures that show the effect of using the various white balance settings, and some pictures with conversion into grayscale and sepia.
